Edinburgh Reviews introduces a new folklore-inspired logo

August 4, 2023 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Zebra Eclipse’s Edinburgh Reviews blog, which has a studio of accompanying social media profiles, officially introduces a new logo design as the Scottish capital opens for the festival season.

ER - urisk and a green maiden.

Designed and illustrated by Bronwen Winter Phoenix, our Creative Director, the logo shows two figures coming together in a welcome embrace, and at least one of the silhouettes is non-human. They are, in fact, a urisk and a green maiden.

Bronwen is an Edinburgh-based artist, Galaxy Award-nominated author, a content marketing agency leader and an experienced journalist.

“I asked a lot of Bronwen”, concedes Girdy, “Avoiding some of the typical Scottish and Edinburgh cliches of Saltires and castles was important. I also wanted something that felt positive and represented Edinburgh at its best. At its best, Edinburgh is a wholesome, diverse and welcoming city. That’s not all. I also wanted a logo design that would work on merch and be readily identifiable on social media.”

One of the two figures, known as the urisk, has antler-like horns angled backwards from a bearded face. It’s an outline that invokes mythology and folklore from Scotland’s Celtic roots. The rise in digital storytelling might yet turn the tide of Scottish folklore traditions dying out.

“I’m incredibly pleased with the design,” Girdy continued. “We wanted to avoid tripes and stereotypes with the identities in the logo, but I worried a Beltane figure, fairy or Cernunnos figure would be too complex or intricate. Bronwen has found elegance in simplicity, and the urisk with a green maiden is all that and more.”

Edinburgh Reviews’ new logo is available with a “Not an influencer” slogan or without on a new Redbubble store. Edinburgh Reviews often eschews some “influencer” tactics of charging for coverage. Instead, the blog writes reviews or publishes videos for free and earns money through affiliate marketing, merch and bespoke deals. Our opinions cannot be bought.

Zebra Eclipse dazzles with Bronwen Winter Phoenix!

July 23, 2023 by Andrew Leave a Comment

Zebra Eclipse is proud to welcome Edinburgh-based artist, Galaxy Award-nominated fiction author, experienced journalist and celebrity interviewer Bronwen Winter Phoenix as our Creative Director.

Bronwen

Bronwen has helped transform Zebra Eclipse from being a blog into a fully-fledged company.

The ex-Johnson Press reporter writes for all the studio blogs, is responsible for their look and feel (always a work in progress), is an on-scene and product-in-hand reviewer, TikTok video creator, logo designer in charge of all creative assets, and our resident female John Wick of content.

Having ran her own news and weirdness blog for a time called ‘Feral Army‘ (where the only weapons were words) albeit on a smaller scale, Bronwen is no stranger to coming up with great content.

Speaking of joining Zebra Eclipse, Bronwen said: “Now that I’ve taken some time to focus on my art, I realised I really missed being able to just write things for fun, and having a platform to express myself. I feel like Zebra Eclipse gives me that, and Girdy’s made me feel really welcome.”

Andrew (Girdy) Girdwood, MD and founder of Zebra Eclipse, said: “I’m absolutely delighted!”

He continued: “In my wildest dreams, I dared to find a talent like Bronwen but never expected it to actually happen. Bronwen has run a content marketing agency, and she knows the score at a level even some of the most experienced journalists struggle with.”

Some of our readers (and podcast listeners) may have seen Bronwen’s name coming up again and again on Geek Native, In Pure Spirit and Edinburgh Reviews – where she often forms part of the duo ‘Girdy & Birdy‘ for joint review purposes. She’s pretty much a regular fixture now.

Bronwen said: “Yeah, I’m basically part of the furniture at this point. I couldn’t be happier with the easy, natural way myself and Girdy work together, and from a chance meeting to registering a full-blown company, this has turned into one helluva rollercoaster I never want to get off from!”

She continued: “So far, I’ve found myself reviewing amazing food, finding a home for all of my eccentric ramblings – and writing some new ones – rowing on the canal, shooting hoops, coming up with new and creative ways to get Zebra Eclipse out there, and designing new logos to help us put our best foot forward! What’s next? I can’t wait to find out.”

The collective noun for Zebra is ‘dazzle’, and with Bronwen, we’re sure to dazzle (blame Girdy for that line).

He said: “Yeah, I know, it’s true but cheesy and thankfully, none of us here are lactose intolerant. Now is the perfect chance for a dinosaur-themed mocktail bar in Edinburgh to get in touch with a horror movie night”.

Girdy and Bronwen have big plans for Zebra Eclipse, and as a company one of the most significant periods for us will be August, during the Edinburgh Fringe – with Zebra Eclipse being media accredited for the first time. It may be one of the first true tests!

Stay tuned, and don’t forget to check back here for all things Zebra Eclipse!
